19世纪初，莫斯科在拿破仑大军进攻下成为一座废墟，好在城市并未沦陷，战后统治者除了迅速恢复克里姆林宫的旧有规模外，还在红场上增建了不少讲究色彩装饰的教堂。 今天的克里姆林宫由一道全长2235米，厚6米，部分高度约20米的砖红色围墙包围，内部面积达28万平方米。 除4座城门、19座塔楼外，里面还有许多壮观的建筑，包括教堂，皇宫及办公大楼等，规模十分庞大。
